In 1989, Apple was creating a new test for facility for their advanced chipsets for the Macintosh computer. My job was to design an interior space for the lab. As inspiration and fun I used the movie ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ monolith. I designed the monolith penetrating the lab wall with a glass facade and entry door. I called the lab “Val 1000”, a precursor to the AI “Hal 5000” in the movie. The engineers loved it.
